30 years of Apples in 2 minutes

30 years of Apples in 2 minutes: "

Gary Katz sent us this video that he did of his Apple Computer collection. One system morphs into another, starting with the Apple II. Not every system is here, but most of them are. Seeing the eMate (remember that?) reminded me I want to do a casemod of some modern hardware inside that case. The eMate was a flop, but the case was really cool (tres Batman).

Social Media S.O.S.

.: "

"I'll send an S.O.S. to the world…I´ll hope that someone gets my…Message in a bottle." The Police

The missing person´s case involving Portland youngster Kyron Horman has certainly drawn a huge amount of nationwide media coverage for obvious reasons since what happened to this family is every parent´s worst nightmare brought to life. Fortunately for me, my family has no experience in living through this scenario…however, if it did happen to us, I hope I would have the fortitude to do more than just hope the police find my child and bring him/her home safely. Playing actively in the social media space to supplement the police effort could yield huge dividends in the search effort. Many victimized families utilize offline media to make public pleas in an effort to find their missing family member…however, the benefits of working social media to help solve the case are frequently untapped.

What would be elements of a good strategy to put into play?

Domain Names: Hopefully, you´ve already purchased the dot com domain names of everyone in your family (if they are available). A well-publicized missing child case will garner lots of news attention and if you are capable of putting out a message giving out necessary and pertinent details about your child & asking the public for help, it needs to primarily reside on the web and be indexable by the search engines (even if it also resides elsewhere). It´s also important that when you communicate to either online or offline media, you include your website URL. If done properly, your domain name should rank highly for people searching for more information about the missing child and your message will have a very wide reach. Just be careful to not to push live information the authorities wouldn´t want you to share.

News Media Outreach: Sure, the media would love to talk to you. There are plenty of reasons why you aren´t / shouldn´t / wouldn´t talk directly to them. However, if you carefully push out information via your website and social media, the media will be your greatest advocates in spreading your message far and wide. If you can reach out to them in limited fashion (and local media is always easy to find & connect with) just to let them know how and where you will be disseminating your message, they´ll hang on each and every word you publish. Then, if relevant, the national media will pick up the story from the local media.

Twitter: Nothing galvanizes a community more than a missing child. The news media is already spreading your message in its own way but frequently, their delivery can be cumbersome and less than timely. A tweet w/ link to updated information on your website is an extremely efficient way to get your message to interested parties with incredible haste. Once the national media picked up on Kyron´s disappearance, top Tweeters like @ev and @iamnotdiddy broadcast messages about the case which really helped increase its visibility. If you are up to reaching out to these visible folks with words of thanks, perhaps they´ll keep spreading your message making it exponentially more effective. If you can get your URL into their tweets, you´ll generate a lot of people who can then read your blog and subscribe to your RSS feed for your latest updates.

Facebook: Facebook can be a double-edged sword. Locking down your personal account during such a crisis is likely the best strategy…if you are broadcasting messages inconsistent with a grieving family, you´ll get publicly flogged. Facebook Fan Pages are a way to spread your message through the Facebook community…however, I´d likely just use them as a vehicle for reposting the website content behind the Facebook walled garden. The compelling nature of your message will make it likely to spread and your personal Facebook friends are the best candidates make it happen. I wouldn´t add any Facebook Friends that you wouldn´t add under normal circumstances…you should keep your personal communications apart from the effort at hand.

Other Networks: It would be awesome if your messaging gets Dugg / Redditted / Mixxed / Stumbled, but I wouldn´t focus my efforts there unless you already have strong network working on your behalf.

PPC: I don´t expect grieving parents to signup for AdWords after their kid is kidnapped but bidding on the name of the missing child in order to send interested people to your website can bring plenty of additional visibility.

Law enforcement generally isn´t qualified to work your case via social media. If you are able to advocate for your cause online, the chances of a successful outcome should increase.

Stationary that looks like email icons: I swear, what will they think of next? And don't say, 'stationary that looks like Microsoft Office icons' or I'll probably shit myself and die. Designed by Brigada Creativa, this collection of stationary is sure to confuse any recipient to the point where they aren't sure if they're actually using a computer or not. Especially old people. Their brains are all mush. I SAID SIGN OVER THE DEED, GRANDPA!

The Top 25 Facebook Pages People Like Most

When I saw this I was really impressed. There are so many Pages on Facebook but to end up with Selena Gomez (my excuses to her i she gets offended), Zynga poker, Mafia Wars, Vin Diesel, Megan Fox and the list goes its kind of pathetic of what people lately likes, Though that is my opinion. Here I Leave you the Summary and the page for you to see for yourself.:

The Facebook Pages with the largest number of fans are almost entirely relegated to entertainment — including musicians, actors, television shows and movies. According to Inside Facebook’s tool PageData, which counts how many fans Pages acquire, only seven of the Top 25 Pages on Facebook do not fall into this category.

Why Small Businesses Shouldn't Take Social Media for Granted

This post originally appeared on the American Express OPEN Forum, where Mashable regularly contributes articles about leveraging social media and technology in small business.

It seems like social media is everywhere these days. But the 2010 Business Monitor United States report — commissioned by UPS — shows that when it comes to small- and medium-sized businesses, social media is still a missed opportunity. A mere 24% of respondents said they’ve received sales leads from social media, with just 1% citing it as a factor for business growth.

The data would appear to indicate that in spite of all the positive press that social media gets, and all the use cases we’ve seen emerge over the past few years, small business owners are taking social media for granted. When done right, social media can be a valuable source for customer acquisition, retention and satisfaction. Here a few reasons to help drive the value home.

Your SEO Reading List

Your SEO Reading List: "

Recently I presented a webinar for the Verizon Small Business Center on the topic of SEO (search engine optimization) strategies for your small business. I am not an SEO professional myself, so I called upon a panel of experts for small business SEO tips which I related during the webinar.

Along with giving some great SEO tips, the expert panel also recommended a reading list with resources and additional articles.

Here is the resource list they recommended so that you can study and learn more about how SEO can improve your online presence:

  • SEO Tools – An outstanding set of tools by Aaron Wall of SEOBook.com. I happen to know that Aaron has invested a lot of capital and effort into developing these sophisticated tools for the community. Highly recommended!
  • Bloggers Guide to SEO – If you have a blog and want to understand enough about search engine optimization to increase your blog’s reach, read this helpful guide. ( It may take a couple of read-throughs if you’re a complete newbie about SEO, but stick with it. You’ll absorb a little more each time you read it. ) Also by Aaron Wall.
  • Why Trust Matters and How to Earn It – In recent years, as the Web has grown larger, the concept of “trust” in your site has become more important — trust from human readers and trust from search engines. This article by Matt McGee of Small Business SEM explains what trust means in the context of a website. More importantly, it explains how to make YOUR site a trusted site.
  • SEO Success Pyramid graphic – Also from Matt McGee, this graphic is a companion to the article on trust. It describes visually the many components it takes to develop a trusted site. I recommend you print this graphic out, distribute it to your marketing and tech teams, discuss it in team meetings, and refer back to it from time to time.
  • Best Internet Marketing Posts of 2009 – At the end of each year, social media guru Tamar Weinberg pulls together a gigantic “best of” list of blog posts about Internet marketing. Her roundup contains well over 100 articles. A must read!
  • Local Business Listing Optimization Guide – If yours is one of the majority of small businesses that gets its customers locally (i.e., within a 50-mile radius), you need to be aware of some special techniques. This Guide is from Vedran Tomic, who happens to be one of our Small Business Trends experts and who goes by the screen handle “SEO Rabbit.”
  • List Of Linking Tools — Getting links to our sites from other quality sites is crucial to search engine position. Widely acknowledged as an expert in the field of link-building, Debra Mastaler suggests this list. Even if you think you know a little bit about building links, I guarantee you’ll see at least one tool you’ve never heard of before but will want to try out. See also Debra’s related article with link building tools.
  • 5 Quick Ways to Improve Facebook SEO – With so many of us spending so much time on Facebook, don’t forget about increasing your company’s (and personal brand) Facebook presence for search purposes. This is a post from here at Small Business Trends that I recommend.

Folder and tag renaming: "

Post by Wiktor Gworek, 20% task force (Krakow, Poland)

Last year we announced that we wanted to hear your wish list for features in Google Reader, and one of most highly requested features was the ability to rename folders and tags. Today we are rolling out this feature with a little bit of Polish help from Krakow.

You can rename folders and tags on the settings page:

Renaming on the settings page

And you can also edit these names right from the contextual menu in your subscription list.

Also, as we announced last week, today we’ve disabled offline access through Gears, and phased out support for older browsers.

As always, if you have any questions or comments, please head over to our help forums, or send us a message on Twitter.

I bought one of these RSS throw pillows from Justin almost a year ago when Becky hit it in a Flickr pool round-up on CRAFT. It was a steal then at $15, and it looks like Justin has only marked it up a little bit in the meantime, to $19.99, which is still a great price. Mine is a year old, has seen daily use on my living room couch, and still looks great. Comfy, too.
