As we predicted, Mark Zuckerberg’s keynote at the f8 conference in San Francisco Thursday introduced some of the most profound changes seen on Facebook since its inception. So many changes, in fact, that it can be hard to keep track. So here’s a handy-dandy guide.

2. You don’t have to just Like something — now you can [verb] any [noun].
1. You’re going to get a Timeline — a scrapbook of your life.
3. Facebook apps need only ask permission once to share stories on your behalf.
4. All “lightweight” information is going to the Ticker.
5. You can watch TV and movies, listen to music, and read news with your friends — all within Facebook.
6. Facebook has more users and more engagement than ever.

Facebook Changes for Marketers

Changes are a big part of Social Media for the past 5 years. I find myself sometimes saying "I can't keep up with all this changes". Is a real headache the fact that once you seem to manage one thing for the past 30 days in the next 10 days you are going to get a surprise that it has changed. As Arnold Bennett said "Any change, even a change for the better, is always accompanied by drawbacks and discomforts." I do second that. But changes are always good for the future and keeping up it was we have in order to be part of the movement.

One big change is that Facebook has added a control in the top right of each story that users can check to unmark a top story. Facebook will use that information over time to automatically edit the feeds. Since users now have more control over their news feeds, brands with boring or irrelevant updates will have lower visibility. (They will still show up in the Ticker, however.)

How to do that? David Berkowitz, senior director of emerging media and innovation for 360i, says Facebook will now be about branding actions. “Before on Facebook it was about getting people to ‘Like’ the brand,” he says. “Now, it’s about getting people to take social actions enabled by that brand.” For example, if a consumer posts an update about a run they just took, that’s a prime opportunity for Nike. “If your run is powered by Nike, you might still wear Adidas,” says Berkowitz, “but Adidas will have to find something else that’s social about its brand to become part of your story.”

The change will require new thinking from marketers who had merely tried to accumulate as many fans and “Likes” as possible. Jenna Lebel, managing director of strategy at Likeable Media, says the “Like” is “a little less relevant now,” and that marketers will have to work harder to earn their place in news feeds. “Your content is going to need to be absolutely amazing,” she says.

Difference Between thing a great comparison site

I just found this website really cool! I can now be more to the point on conversation and I can actually know the difference between things.

DifferenceBetween is a free to use website that details the differences between two seemingly similar things. Two great things to know for example: advertising and publicity, and the terms ‘infectious’ and ‘contagious.’ You can browse the site for its articles, search specifically by name, or browse the site’s categories that include everything from business to technology.

An Explanation and Some Reflections By Netfilx CEO

Everything below, I just find it really hurtful. I was expecting more of like, you are getting your old account back sorry for the miss understanding. My marketing advisers suck big time. No. This was more of like My Marketing Advisers suck even more and I go by whatever they say. I do not understand still how can you change something that was working perfectly fine for your consumers. Maybe I don't know the end budget or how much money you have lost. But I believe that you are adventuring into something you do not know how its going to work.

My Idea would have been " Create qwikster.com as a competitor against Netflix and lets see how it works". Why will you feel if now you have to go to another website to actually stream and get your DVD. Two different charges to your card. And Keep up with the movies you don't get on time on DVD because they skip it if the first one on your list is not available.

Anyways I believe you can't make everyone happy, but this is kind of screwing it up 2 times in less than 2 months. I wish I can be part of your marketing department. Maybe a real user of Netflix can let you know. Did you do any Focus Group after you change to this idea? Why did you make this decision? Who made this random suggestion? Who is advising you? Did you sleep on it? How will you feel if tomorrow McDonald decides to split and form McBurger & McFries?

Please read below the letter:

Dear Lourdes,

I messed up. I owe you an explanation.

It is clear from the feedback over the past two months that many members felt we lacked respect and humility in the way we announced the separation of DVD and streaming and the price changes. That was certainly not our intent, and I offer my sincere apology. Let me explain what we are doing

For the past five years, my greatest fear at Netflix has been that we wouldn't make the leap from success in DVDs to success in streaming. Most companies that are great at something – like AOL dialup or Borders bookstores – do not become great at new things people want (streaming for us). So we moved quickly into streaming, but I should have personally given you a full explanation of why we are splitting the services and thereby increasing prices. It wouldn’t have changed the price increase, but it would have been the right thing to do.

So here is what we are doing and why.

Many members love our DVD service, as I do, because nearly every movie ever made is published on DVD. DVD is a great option for those who want the huge and comprehensive selection of movies.

I also love our streaming service because it is integrated into my TV, and I can watch anytime I want. The benefits of our streaming service are really quite different from the benefits of DVD by mail. We need to focus on rapid improvement as streaming technology and the market evolves, without maintaining compatibility with our DVD by mail service.

So we realized that streaming and DVD by mail are really becoming two different businesses, with very different cost structures, that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and operate independently.

It’s hard to write this after over 10 years of mailing DVDs with pride, but we think it is necessary: In a few weeks, we will rename our DVD by mail service to “Qwikster”. We chose the name Qwikster because it refers to quick delivery. We will keep the name “Netflix” for streaming.

Qwikster will be the same website and DVD service that everyone is used to. It is just a new name, and DVD members will go to qwikster.com to access their DVD queues and choose movies. One improvement we will make at launch is to add a video games upgrade option, similar to our upgrade option for Blu-ray, for those who want to rent Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 games. Members have been asking for video games for many years, but now that DVD by mail has its own team, we are finally getting it done. Other improvements will follow. A negative of the renaming and separation is that the Qwikster.com and Netflix.com websites will not be integrated.

There are no pricing changes (we’re done with that!). If you subscribe to both services you will have two entries on your credit card statement, one for Qwikster and one for Netflix. The total will be the same as your current charges. We will let you know in a few weeks when the Qwikster.com website is up and ready.

For me the Netflix red envelope has always been a source of joy. The new envelope is still that lovely red, but now it will have a Qwikster logo. I know that logo will grow on me over time, but still, it is hard. I imagine it will be similar for many of you.

I want to acknowledge and thank you for sticking with us, and to apologize again to those members, both current and former, who felt we treated them thoughtlessly.

Both the Qwikster and Netflix teams will work hard to regain your trust. We know it will not be overnight. Actions speak louder than words. But words help people to understand actions.

Respectfully yours,

-Reed Hastings, Co-Founder and CEO, Netflix

p.s. I have a slightly longer explanation along with a video posted on our blog, where you can also post comments.

What Facebooks Latest Changes Mean for BusinessesFacebook recently made a number of product and platform changes that affect companies and brands that market using the world’s most popular social utility. Here are five of the latest changes you need to be aware of:

1. Privacy settings for sharing:

What this means for your business: Facebook wordsmithed the default sharing prompt that alerts users about who sees what they’re about to post. The default setting "Everyone" was changed to "Public," and that subtle change taps into the human psyche surrounding issues related to privacy. "Public" clearly demonstrates that the public at large can view your updates, photos and more, whereas "Everyone" is ambiguous, or even folksy. That, of course, worked to the advantage of social media monitoring tools that rely on lots of public-facing content to fill their dashboards and analytic reports. The new "Public" label will likely result in fewer public-facing citations, which means businesses may have less to listen to.

2. Facebook Deals is dead:

What this means for your business: Facebook Deals was only available to merchants in eight U.S. cities, so unless your business operated in or around one of them, you won’t be impacted by this development. In any event, there’s no shortage of daily deal sites interested in working with you.

3. Ad targeting by Topic:

What this means for your business: If you know your target audience has a set of interests, ad targeting by Topic eliminates the need to manage a complex list of keywords. The addition of Topic targeting also allows businesses and brands to run A/B testing, or split testing, whereby you run two versions of the same ad -- one powered by Topic targeting, the other by Precise Interest targeting -- and then determine which one generates a higher return.

4. Advertising restrictions eased:

What this means for your business: Lifting restrictions on what is often viewed as advertisements for somewhat unsavory offerings may case users to lump all Facebook advertisements into the same distasteful pool. Now, more than ever, truth and authenticity in advertising matters.

5. Places gives way to location tagging:

What this means for your business: The impact here is minimal. Users will still be able to check-into a geographical location and take advantage of check-in Deals created by your business. But instead of using Places, they’ll use location tagging to indicate where they are -- possibly resulting in even more people tagging your businesses location.

10 Ways to Turn Your Blog into a Lead-Generation Machine

BY Ann Handley
|

September 7, 2011|

The Customer Capture ContraptionSometimes when I hear companies talking about creating a "machine" for their lead-generation efforts, I think about Dr. Seuss. Specifically, I think about all the fantastical and imaginative machines he created in his 46 children's books--like the Super-Axe-Hacker, the Utterly Sputter and (my favorite) the Eight-Nozzled Elephant-Toted Boom Blitz, a mighty machine that rapidly fires explosive sour-cherry stones.

39% of b2b marketers in North America find blog posts to be valuable marketing content.

--Focus research, June 2011

Here's a 10-step prescription to increase your visibility and attract more qualified folks to your site. It may not shoot cherry pits, but it will help you convert your traffic into leads.

1. Make your blog an extension of your main website.
2. Solve or share, don't shill.
3. Show up.
Organizational Goals for Content Marketing
4. Avoid War and Peace posts.
5. Pen a killer headline.
6. Link to other resources.
7. Embed companion calls to action.
8. Offer subscription services.
9. Trick out with social bling.
10. Remember one final thing.
